Happy Labor Day! It's the one day of the year built around your work, so it feels wrong to spend it… working.
So I'll keep this short.
You do impressive things all week and barely notice, because to you it's just Tuesday. But the stuff that feels obvious to you is exactly what someone else is trying to figure out.
That's the idea behind this week's prompts. I want to take the stress out of your posting by pointing you back at the work you already do. All you have to do is fill in your own experience.
1. What's the thing coworkers always come to you for?
There’s probably something your coworkers always ask you for help with. Maybe it's fixing a spreadsheet or using a tool only you seem to know. That's a great topic for a post. Name it, then share your top tip for someone trying to do it on their own.
2. What do you do differently now than when you started?
Think back to your first month in your current role and one habit or belief you've since dropped. Maybe you used to over-explain in every meeting, or say yes to every request that landed in your inbox. Write the before, the after, and what changed your mind. Someone earlier in their career is going to read it and go "oh thank god, it's not just me."
3. What's a piece of standard advice in your industry you disagree with?
There’s always some “best practice” that gets repeated but doesn’t work for you. Share what it is, explain what you do instead, and give a real example from your own experience. This way, it’s clear you’ve tried it and aren’t just sharing an opinion. This prompt usually sparks good conversations.
Pick one and write it today… or don't… It's a holiday, and I'm not your boss :)
See you next Monday!
P.S. This whole issue was about not doing it alone, so let me put my money where my mouth is. If The Lunch Break makes showing up on LinkedIn a little easier, pass it to someone who'd feel the same way. Refer a few people, and I'll do some real work for you in return:
3 referrals: I'll go through your LinkedIn profile and tell you exactly what I'd tweak so it sounds like you. Headline, banner, featured section, the whole thing (and whether you're coming across like a person or a walking résumé).
5 referrals: A spotlight in an upcoming issue. I'll show off how you use LinkedIn and what's working, so other Lunch Breakers can connect and say hi.
10 referrals: A "good bones" session. I interview you the way I do with my ghostwriting clients, and you walk away with the full transcript, the bones of a post pulled from your answers, and a quick tip on how to turn it into the real thing.
