🍴Are you getting personal?

It's OK to be yourself on LinkedIn.

If you’ve ever read a post that said, “LinkedIn isn’t Facebook!”

You’re not alone.

Plenty of people on the platform are against posting personal updates.

While I agree to an extent (messy drama like broken friendships and neighbor spats aren’t meant for LinkedIn), there are ways to pull your personal life into your posts.

And, I believe if you want to build your presence, you have to let people into your life beyond your job title.

Balancing Act: 80/20 Rule

The most successful creators on LinkedIn understand this balance.

They know building trust requires more than just talking about their professional abilities. It requires highlighting their humanity.

Think about it. When you’re choosing someone to work with, would you prefer:

  • A feed full of industry jargon and company updates?

Or…

  • Someone who balances thought leadership with behind-the-scenes content on building their business and highlighting their personal life outside of work?

If I had to guess, the latter.

The key now is striking a balance between professional and personal content.

To do that, I suggest the classic 80/20 rule:

  • 80% - Professional insights, industry expertise, and valuable content.

  • 20% - Strategic personal stories that reinforce your brand.

Here are five thought starters (plus a few examples) if you need help adding personality to your posts.

5 LinkedIn Personal Post Ideas

  1. Morning routine.

What are your morning non-negotiables? Give us a glimpse into your early morning pre-work hours.

Don’t overthink it either!

You can share a bulleted list and end with a question asking your followers to share their favorite part of their morning routine.

  1. Work set-up.

Where do you get your best work done? Your home office? Coffee shop? Local library?

Share your favorite work spot in a post and include a picture of your set-up if possible.

  1. Productivity tip.

Who doesn’t want to save more time or make the most of it?

Sharing productivity tips is a great way to encourage engagement and spark conversations in the comments.

  1. Weekend plans.

What do you do on the weekend to recharge for the week ahead?

You could share your Sunday night ritual of reviewing your calendar and setting up your to-do list. Or, maybe you can talk about why you spend the weekend phone-free?

Whatever it is, invite people to see how you spend your weekends and the why behind it.

  1. Highlight hobbies.

Are you an avid reader? Runner? Pickleball fan?

Your hobbies are gateways to connection with people who share your interests.

With these ideas in mind, what will you share this week to balance your professional and personal life on LinkedIn?
