But seriously, Iā€™m a serial overpacker!

I canā€™t help it. I need options so I can wear the same thing repeatedly!

As a writer, I notice those overpacking tendencies in my content.

Iā€™m a details girl, which adds to my word count and, sometimes, the readers' confusion.

Mark Twain said it best: ā€œI didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.ā€

It's easy to write a lot.

We were graded mainly on hitting page and word counts growing up.

Now, we're unlearning the habit.

One way to break it is with Kaplan's Law of Words.

It's a concept Harry Dry brought to light in one of my FAVORITE interviews of all time. Here's the link to it.

The law statesā€¦

ā

Any words that aren't working for you are working against you.

It encourages you to filter out unnecessary words to get to the point.

Your words need to pull their weight.

Here are some tips for becoming a law-abiding copywriter:

  1. Opt for simple terms. Why say "utilize" when you can say "use?" Or "demonstrate" instead of "Show? Simple words are easier to understand.

  2. Mute modifiers. Itā€™s very important to eliminate unnecessary words that donā€™t add to your writing. Too many adjectives and adverbs add clutter to your content.

  3. Remove redundancies. Sharpen your message by avoiding phrases like ā€œToā€¦ā€ or ā€œDue to the factā€¦ā€ Get to the point in fewer words.

  4. Use active voice. It reduces word count, strengthens writing, and improves readability.

  5. Forget fluff. Your main message is your North Star. Every word should support it. If they donā€™t, get rid of them.

Thatā€™s all for today!
