People love stories.

They transport us from reality to somewhere completely new and exciting.

Successful brands understand this.

They understand that emotions move humans to take action.

They tell stories in their social posts to create those ā€œah-ha!ā€ moments in their audiences.

You can do the same.

But, where do you start?

Here are three ways to infuse storytelling in your social media captions:

1. The hook, or first line of your caption, is the most important.

Your first line of copy sets the stage for the rest of your caption.

Ask a question. Share a surprising fact or statistic. Offer a relatable anecdote.

You want to get people's attention so they continue reading.

Hereā€™s an example of one of my posts that started off with a question.

I liked that someone couldnā€™t answer it just by looking at the picture.

You had to hit the ā€œā€¦moreā€ prompt to see if you agreed or disagreed.

I got peopleā€™s attention with the hook and kept it with the rest of the caption copy:

1,270 Impressions

2. Focus on emotion.

Pick an emotion for your post and work backward.

How do you want them to feel after they read your caption?

Let's say you want your readers to feel more confident when making a speech.

Your caption would start by painting a relatable picture of their feelings right now, in this moment.

Theyā€™re nervous and uneasy about standing up in front of a crowd and talking.

By the end of your post, after sharing helpful tips, you want your reader to scroll away feeling empowered and confident.

Remember, every good story has:

  • Build-up

  • Tension

  • Relief

3. Senses sell.

Sensory details are a mode of teleportation.

Think about it.

What would catch your attention if you're scrolling social and see a bakery introducing its brand-new cinnamon rolls?

Option 1:

Introducing our brand-new cinnamon rolls!

Made fresh and served warm daily starting Monday, December 2.

Option 2:

Starting Monday, December 2, when you walk into the bakery, you'll be greeted by the sweet aroma of cinnamon and sugar.

Why? Because we're bringing back a cozy classic - cinnamon rolls!

The soft, pillowy texture and warm, creamy frosting make them too good to pass up.

Itā€™s the perfect blend of sweetness and spiceā€¦

We could write about this all day - but customers are waiting, and now weā€™re drooling.

Anyways - Monday, December 2. Cinnamon Rolls.

Geez, Iā€™m hungry from just writing that!

Thatā€™s all for today!
