There’s only so much Gabby’s Dollhouse I can take before I lose my mind.

So, I introduced my daughter to a classic, The Little Rascals.

It was a favorite of mine growing up, so I was glued to the screen.

An exchange between Alfalfa and Waldo made me laugh and, of course, think about writing.

Alfalfa: The two of us will be singing in the talent show together.

Waldo: How redundant.

The humor of that goes over kids’ heads, but for me, it hit differently.

It’s a good reminder that strong writing is a result of excellent editing.

Take Alfalfa’s line, we could tighten it a few ways:

  • We’ll be singing in the talent show.

  • Darla and I are singing in the talent show.

  • The two of us are singing in the talent show.

Each packs a bit more of a punch than the original.

For me, when I finish a first draft, I step away for a few hours (or even a day) before revisiting it.

When I come back, the real work’s done.

Sometimes, I question my intellect; sometimes, I pat myself on the back.

But, every time, I simplify and improve my content.

Give something you’re working on another look today.

Fresh eyes could make a good piece of content, great.
