šŸ“The writing trick everyone notices

It takes your content from bland to BAM.

291 words ā¬‡ļø

I love a good detail.

I’m the type of person who, if you tell me a story, wants to know what way the wind was blowing, the arch of the person’s eyebrow when they found out about the news, and the temperature in the room.

Leave no detail out.

I want it all.

But, how much detail is too much detail when writing content online?

When writing LinkedIn posts, you want just enough.

It’s a delicate balance of sharing details that make a difference and details that waste valuable mental energy.

So, how do you do that?

Meet concrete phrases.

A concrete phrase is ā€œa phrase that describes a tangible, specific thing or event that can be experienced through the senses, as opposed to abstract ideas or concepts.ā€œ

Concrete phrases are the antidote to abstract phrases.

We glaze over abstract phrases because they’re bland:

ā€œHappiness is like sunshine on a rainy day.ā€

Doesn’t do much, does it?

Concrete phrases, on the other hand, are like BAM moments for your writing that get people’s attention.

Here are some examples:

😓 Bland: ā€œShe grew impatient in the meeting.ā€

šŸ’„ BAM: ā€œShe tapped her fingers to the beat of her heart as her patience rapidly evaporated.ā€

😓 Bland: ā€œThe office environment was a mirror of the current state of the culture.ā€

šŸ’„ BAM: ā€œThe burnt-out fluorescent lights, like the employee morale, created a dim feeling in the office.ā€

😓 Bland: ā€œHis presentation was disrupted by notifications on his computer.ā€

šŸ’„ BAM: ā€œHis presentation, like a ringing cell phone in a quiet movie theater, was disrupted by a barrage of Slack messages.ā€
