Commenting is the yin to the content-creation yang. Balancing both is the sweet spot for meaningful growth on LinkedIn.
So while I talk a lot about how to comment, there's something I haven't talked much about:
Where to comment.
Because the places you show up matter just as much as the posts you write.
Think about it. Your comments, unlike posts, don't live in isolation. They're an extension of someone else's thoughts and conversations.
It's like an ecosystem of people, dialogue, and networks. And when you pay attention, it sends you signals daily.
I call them comment signals, and they're the best way to grow your presence without forcing anything.
What's a comment signal?
A comment signal is the subtle clue your feed gives you when someone you trust engages with someone you don't know yet.
Let's say someone you know/like/respect comments on a post that's interesting to you from a person you don't know.
That is a signal and your cue that it's a post worth commenting on.
The beauty of this is that the algorithm isn't telling you to do something. You're doing it because someone you trust pointed you toward them without even trying.
This is how you grow your network in a meaningful way and enter new networks without any awkward, cold outreach.

Comment signals actually work because you’re growing your network through people you already trust.
It’s like a built-in filter that lets you join where your voice actually fits.
You're not forcing comments on posts to hit a quota. Instead, you'll find yourself commenting where you naturally have something to add.
The best part is that they feel natural, not transactional. You're commenting because you want to comment, not because you have to.
Your Turn
The next time you open LinkedIn, don't scroll looking for "big" posts to comment on.
Look for signals instead.
And if you had a good exchange in the comments and you like what the author covers, the next natural step is to send a connection request.
Here’s a simple note you can use:
Hi [Name] - I loved your post today about [topic].
[Add one line about what you liked or why it stood out.]
Looking forward to connecting and learning more about you!
It’s not formal or salesy. It’s just a natural continuation of your connection in the comments.
Sometimes a single comment and a thoughtful note is all it takes to open the door to a meaningful relationship on LinkedIn.
