Don't leave your readers waiting at the door.
517 words ā¬ļø
Your friend invites you over.
You get to their house and ring the doorbell.
The door swings open. Your friendās standing there.
You make eye contact. They walk away. You stand there. Your head tilts and your eyebrow scrunches like The Rock.
Should you walk in? Should you leave? Is this a weird TikTok trend?
Awkward.
Thatās what itās like when someone subscribes to your newsletter, and you donāt have a welcome sequence.
When someone joins, you want to be the welcoming friend at the door, inviting them in with a smile and clear direction.
Itās easy to overthink your welcome email.
After all, itās your first official touch with the reader.
But, itās not that serious.
Start small and build from there.
Hereās how ā¬ļø
5 welcome email tips
1. Strong subject line.
Subject lines are gateways to engagement.
You can make it catchy, but it has to be relevant.
Mine is Welcome to The Lunch Break š“
My preview text is What is it? And, why it's worth a spot in your inbox.
Itās nothing flashy but reiterates my newsletter name, which is good for reader recognition.
2. Keep it simple.
Donāt get hung up on building elaborate sequences and perfectly designed templates.
Keep it simple at first. Hereās mine.
Itās designed just enough that it doesnāt feel bland.

3. Welcome them.
It might sound obvious, but start by welcoming or thanking them for subscribing.
Iāll admit, mine is a little much, but I like it! (see above)
I think it shows off my personality right out of the gate.
TIP: Keep your welcome/thank you text to one to two sentences.
4. Set the stage.
Your welcome email should include a blurb of what to expect.
Here are some ideas:
Content: What topics you'll cover
Frequency: How often they'll hear from you
Format: What your typical emails look like
Value: What they'll learn or gain

5. Encourage Engagement.
šØThis is important šØ
If you want your emails to stay in peopleās primary inboxes, they need to interact with your welcome email.
There are a few ways to do this:
Inbox instructions - Ask subscribers to move your email to Primary if it landed in the Promotions tab. Each email service provider (ESP) has instructions on how to do this. Research it and explicitly tell your subscribers.
Reply prompt - Ask them to reply to the email. I do this. I ask readers to Reply with āGot it.ā Itās simple and effective.
Link clicks - Include a link and ask them to click it. You can link out to anything. your social profiles, a freebie, a helpful blog, you name it. Their clicks signal to the ESP your content is valuable to the reader.
Use these tips to make your welcome email count not complicated.
