“Write like you talk.”
How many times have you heard/read that advice?
My guess is a lot.
Though it might feel overdone, I suggest you actually use it.
Especially with the rise of AI, copy is becoming somewhat stale, and people are over it.
They glaze over content like a bouncer checks IDs at a bar.
It’s a quick glance, and they’re on to the next thing.
As marketers, we don’t want that.
We want people to settle in and spend time with our content.
Which brings us back to the advice that kicked off this email:
Write like you talk.
It sounds easy, but flipping the switch from professional to personal isn’t as easy as it sounds, so if you need some help, take that piece of advice a step further and:
Pretend your friend is asking you about your product/service.
What would you say to them?
Would you be transactional? Would you recite the specs like a robot?
I bet you wouldn’t.
You’d get personal.
You’d know what aspect of your product/service they’d find interesting, and you’d talk to them about it.
You’d share how you could see them using it and highlight its versatility.
There’d be an energy transfer of excitement from you to them, and they’d take action.
This is the type of exchange you want to emulate with your writing.
You want to write content as if you’re talking to a friend.
You want it to feel like a one-to-one conversation.
Something I do that makes this exercise easier is record a voice note.
Trust me, it’s a little awkward, and your first pass at it will be rough.
But, once you get into a flow, you can get your thoughts out of your head, find your gems, polish them, and share them with your audience.
